Hackathon – Utilizing Satellite Earth Observation in Monitoring and Evaluating World Events
In recent years, the intensity of armed conflicts has significantly increased due to unstable political situations. Additionally, our civilization faces significant phenomena induced by climate change, such as temperature anomalies accompanied by droughts or fires. Objective information is needed to evaluate and find solutions to these serious events. Satellite Earth observation has become an established method capable of providing high-quality data and technologies in Earth observation. This hackathon focuses on utilizing remote sensing and GIS to develop applications for monitoring and evaluating significant world events related to security or environmental risks. Using GIS and remote sensing data, we will brainstorm together and try to find solutions for selected global phenomena. Join our hackathon and let’s work together on addressing international issues using open-source GIS software and freely available satellite data.
Registration is open for both teams and individuals. Participation in the hackathon is free. Mentors and the expert committee will consist of professionals.

The seminar will present the current state and future plans for creating the digital twin of Earth: Digital Earth. Two key European initiatives in this area will be detailed – the Digital Twin Element (DTE) at ESA and Destination Earth (European Commission). The seminar will present the main objectives, development concepts, methodological approaches, and involvement of research and user sectors, and in the case of DTE, project opportunities including the possibility of bilateral meetings with program manager Kathrin Hintze (ESA).
Seminar participants will be introduced to the progress achieved, the scientific and societal relevance of Digital Earth, and international and interdisciplinary contexts. The final part of the seminar will provide an opportunity to introduce planned support programs with financial support and hold a joint discussion on the involvement of Czech institutions in Digital Earth projects.
Program:
Ondřej Šváb (Ministry of Transport): Opening remarks on Digital Earth
Kathrin Hintze (ESA): Concept and relevancy of Digital Earth, ESA Digital Twin Element project
Jakub Dabrowski (European Commission): Destination Earth Initiative – opening remarks and overview
Karel Charvát (Plann4All): The role of Digital Twins (DestinE) in Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Development
Radmila Brožková (Czech Hydrometeorological Institute): Destination Earth On-Demand Extremes Digital Twin
Přemysl Štych: Remote Sensing/Copernicus domains in Digital Earth
Joint discussion on Digital Earth in the Czech Republic
Refreshments and informal part of the seminar
